How to Include Massage in your Recovery

Massage therapy is an effective modality that can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments.

Did you know that we offer massage therapy at our clinic? Besides feeling fantastic, there are a load of rehab benefits that massage therapy can provide. If you are looking to speed-up recovery from an injury, using an interdisciplinary rehab team can be highly beneficial. Massage therapy is a great modality that can be used alongside other treatments such as physiotherapy. In fact, massage therapy and physiotherapy can be beneficial to one another when used in conjunction for rehab. Massage therapy can help release tight or guarded tissue, improve range of motion, and reduce inflammation. This allows physiotherapists to progress treatment faster as restrictions are reduced.

Your massage therapist will customize your treatment and experience to your needs and goals, whether that be relaxation, sport-specific therapy, injury rehab and more. Below is an explanation of different types of massages, and the techniques and modalities that our massage therapists may use during treatment depending on your needs and goals. Read more about different massage types and techniques below:

Swedish Massage Therapy

A gentle, full-body massage therapy that is ideal for clients who are new to massage therapy, are sensitive to touch, have a lot of tension, or simply want to relax. Swedish Massage Therapy uses a combination of kneading, long and flowing strokes, passive joint movement, and deep circular motions to aid in full-body relaxation.

Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

This type of massage therapy can be used alone or in conjunction with Swedish Massage to help reduce chronic pain by relieving tension. Deep Tissue Massage Therapy uses slower strokes with deeper pressure to relieve tension from the deepest layers of muscles and connective tissue.

Sports Massage Therapy:

A combination of Swedish Massage Therapy and deep tissue used to relieve tension caused by repetitive use injuries that one would obtain from playing a sport or from their occupation. Sports Massage Therapy can help improve flexibility and performance and help relieve overall muscle tension.

Techniques and modalities that may be used by our massage therapists:

Cupping

Effective in releasing muscle tightness, by pulling apart stuck fascia making the muscle more pliable. If muscle is not too sore this technique can be made more efficient when used with active range of motion, if muscle is not too sore.

IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization a.k.a. Graston)

This technique is used to cause Inflammation to the injured area which promotes healing and speeds up recovery by improving blood flow to the area.

Fascial wax

Can be used instead of lotion or oil to provide better grip to the tissue. Using Fascial wax is beneficial for targeted massages on very tight muscles that require extra work, because they prevent sliding across tissue.

We are always available if you have any further questions, or if you would like to book-in for a massage.
